What an assessment for MEM05080 must cover
31 assessable components: 3 elements (14 performance criteria), 8 performance evidence and 9 knowledge evidence requirements. An audit-defensible tool maps every question and task back to these — that mapping is the coverage matrix Auditori generates alongside the assessment.
Elements & performance criteria
1 Determine job requirements
- 1.1Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- 1.2Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
- 1.3Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
- 1.4Identify job requirements from WPS, customer requirements, drawings, job sheets or work instructions
- 1.5Obtain WPS clarification or approval of variation to WPS from appropriate person in accordance with SOPs
2 Prepare welding materials and equipment for GMAW welding to code standard
- 2.1Prepare materials to produce weld to code standard
- 2.2Perform routine maintenance on welding equipment
- 2.3Set up welding equipment
- 2.4Select consumables in accordance with WPS
3 Weld joints using GMAW to procedure specifications
- 3.1Weld materials in accordance with WPS
- 3.2Apply post-welding heat treatment where specified
- 3.3Inspect welded joints visually for conformance to specifications
- 3.4Rectify discontinuities to ensure compliance to code requirements
- 3.5Maintain weld records in accordance with SOPs
Performance evidence
- follow work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
- identify and interpret job specifications and weld parameters from weld procedure specifications, drawings, sketches and verbal or written job instructions for performing welds using gas metal arc welding (GMAW) to code standards on at least two occasions
- clean and prepare materials to specifications
- set up welding equipment and perform routine maintenance
- produce butt and fillet welds in the flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions to meet customer specifications and the requirements of AS 1210 Pressure vessels, AS 4041 Pressure piping, and American Society of Engineers (ASME) IX or equivalent national or international standards on at least two occasions
- rectify identified weld discontinuities on at least two occasions
- complete and maintain weld records related to GMAW to code standards onto standard workplace forms.
- Note: Where a volume and/or frequency is not specified, demonstration must be provided at least once.
Knowledge evidence
- safe welding practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- requirements to produce welds to quality of AS 1210 Pressure vessels, AS 4041 Pressure piping, and ASME IX or equivalent
- AS 1796 Certification of welders and welding supervisors or equivalent national and international standards relevant to GMAW
- standards or codes relevant to GMAW to code standards
- causes and control of distortion when welding to code standards
- methods for preparing plate and pipe for code standard welding
- pre-welding and post-welding heating methods and requirements for plate and pipe welding to code standard
- welding cracks or defects relevant to GMAW pipe welding to code standards
- requirements for maintaining weld records to code standard.

Questions about assessing MEM05080
What does an assessment tool for MEM05080 need to cover?
To satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence, an assessment for MEM05080 needs to address all 31 unit components: 3 elements with 14 performance criteria, 8 performance evidence requirements, 9 knowledge evidence requirements, and the foundation skills. A coverage matrix mapping each question and task to these components is what an auditor looks for.
How does Auditori generate an assessment tool for MEM05080?
Auditori pulls the current release of MEM05080 from training.gov.au and generates a complete package: candidate assessment, assessor guide with model answers and observation criteria, and a coverage matrix mapping every component. A suitably qualified person then reviews and approves the draft in a built-in workflow — consistent with ASQA's guidance on AI use in VET — before export as branded PDF and editable Word.
Is the first assessment tool really free?
Yes. Every new account includes one free credit — enough to generate the complete assessment tool for MEM05080 — with no card and no subscription required. After that it's pay-as-you-go per unit.
Can I check my existing MEM05080 assessment instead of generating a new one?
Yes — upload your existing assessment or learner guide and Auditori maps it against every element, performance criterion, PE and KE of MEM05080, showing exactly what's covered and what's missing. Mapping costs a quarter of a credit.
