Elements & performance criteria

Performance evidence

• direct at least two examples of television programs and program segments.
• In the course of the above, the candidate must:
• consult with production personnel about the best way to achieve requirements for programs and program segments
• communicate with production personnel and program guests in ways that respect their cultural and personal circumstances
• check arrangements and equipment are in place prior to filming of television programs and program segments
• brief and direct talent and crew during filming of television programs and program segments
• manage a number of tasks concurrently during filming
• take decisive action in response to unforeseen circumstances during live programs
• meet production criteria, deadlines, and creative goals that are technically feasible
• produce and manage circulation of workplace documentation.

Knowledge evidence

• roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in television production including pre-production and production staff, crew and talent
• production approaches for television programs and segments that meet industry standard creative and technical requirements
• typical problems of directing television programs and common solutions
• directing procedures and single and multi-camera techniques for making programs that require minimal editing
• key features of sound and editing equipment used to produce television segments and programs
• different ways television directors communicate with production personnel and talent as programs are being recorded
• organisational procedures for listing program elements on running sheets and storing documentation
• legislation that governs the direction and production of television programs and segments
• work health and safety procedures that apply to television production.

Engages in discussions and provides constructive feedback to required personnel using selected communication methods and practices.
• Reading: Extracts and confirms scheduling information, procedures and production requirements by interpreting different documents.
• Writing: Conveys information according to organisational procedures and production requirements by developing material for performers using clear language. Records information from discussions for future planning.
• Initiative and enterprise: Monitors implementation, taking decisive actions as required.
• Planning and organising: Achieves creative and technical production goals by planning, organising and directing required tasks.
• Self-management: Meets expectations associated with own role in compliance with organisational procedures and legislation.
• Teamwork: Achieves program requirements in collaboration with performers. Demonstrates awareness of interplay of cultural factors involved in group interactions.
