What an assessment for CPPSSI3015 must cover

21 assessable components: 3 elements (12 performance criteria), 3 performance evidence and 6 knowledge evidence requirements. An audit-defensible tool maps every question and task back to these — that mapping is the coverage matrix Auditori generates alongside the assessment.

Elements & performance criteria

1 Prepare for data collection.

  • 1.1Clarify data collection requirements for basic surveying tasks with appropriate persons.
  • 1.2Identify organisational, legislative and manufacturer requirements for safe data collection.
  • 1.3Select equipment and collection method to meet task requirements in consultation with appropriate persons.
  • 1.4Implement safe work practices and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to mitigate identified hazards and risks, according to organisational requirements.

2 Carry out basic data collection.

  • 2.1Set up and use selected equipment, according to manufacturer specifications and standard operating procedures, to collect basic surveying data to meet task requirements.
  • 2.2Comply with relevant safe work method statements (SWMSs) during data collection.
  • 2.3Collect measurements and data accurately using organisational procedures and proformas.
  • 2.4Determine position for survey station, perform and record a traverse, and collect designated attributes for designated features.
  • 2.5Record, calculate, reduce and check measurements before leaving site, according to organisational requirements.

3 Finalise data collection.

  • 3.1Complete documentation and store data, according to organisational requirements.
  • 3.2Clean, pack and store equipment, according to manufacturer and organisational requirements.
  • 3.3Report any equipment faults or operational problems, according to organisational requirements.

Performance evidence

  • To demonstrate competency a candidate must meet the elements and performance criteria of this unit by accurately recording basic surveying data for two field projects.
  • Each field project must cover: closed traverse, detail survey, contour survey, closed level run.
  • Each project must use a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) or total station and one piece of equipment from the following: measuring tape, automatic, digital or laser level, ground penetrating radar, terrestrial laser scanner, survey drone or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Knowledge evidence

  • uses and features of data collection equipment
  • care of data collection equipment
  • factors affecting equipment use and accuracy of data
  • attributes associated with a dataset
  • accepted industry standards for recording surveying metadata
  • organisational and industry procedures relating to: collecting, recording and storing surveying data; work tasks, including equipment use; work health and safety (WHS) procedures relating to data collection activities.
