AURKTJ116 — Use earthmoving and off-the-road tyre handlers

Elements & performance criteria

Performance evidence

• The candidate must demonstrate using earthmoving and off-the-road tyre handlers to meet required outcomes on a minimum of three separate occasions.
• follow safe working procedures
• locate and interpret relevant documentation, workplace policies, and procedures
• select an appropriate work area, identify hazards and implement risk controls
• select appropriate equipment and tools for operation and determine suitability of tyre handler for the work
• select appropriate earthmoving or OTR tyre handler for the work, from at least one of the following pieces of equipment: forklift-mounted tyre handler, loader-mounted tyre handler, vehicle loading crane fitted with a tyre handler attachment
• inspect the tyre handler and specialist tools and equipment for faults or damage
• inspect tyres, wheels, and rim assemblies for damage
• complete work processes, including the safe storage of equipment and completion of required workplace documentation.
• The above work must be performed using tyres of equal to or greater than 600 mm (24 inches) nominal diameter.

Knowledge evidence

• workplace policies and procedures for using earthmoving and OTR tyre handlers, including how to locate and interpret: manufacturer specifications for: manipulating tyres and assemblies with tyre handlers, operating earthmoving and OTR tyre handlers; relevant Australian standards: AS1418 Cranes, hoists and winches, AS2359 Powered industrial trucks
• work health and safety (WHS) and duty of care requirements when operating an earthmoving and OTR tyre handlers including: conducting pre-start inspections and reporting damage or faults, establishing an exclusion zone, inspecting the work zone for damage and hazards, procedures and hazard control measures when operating a tyre handler in an emergency
• earthmoving and OTR tyre handler controls, instruments and indicators and their use
• factors affecting selection of work site, including site layout and obstacles
• functionality and operational requirements of fall-back arrest arms, including how to identify correct positioning and configuration
• types of damage and faults associated with earthmoving and off-the-road tyre handlers, including: equipment and tool damage, tyre, wheel and rim assembly damage, tyre handler damage or faults, work site damage

Foundation skills

• Reading skills: read and interpret written information in Australian Standards and workplace procedures relating to the use of earthmoving and OTR tyre handlers.
• Writing skills: document actions required during work.
• Oral communication skills: report damage, defects or faults; communicate with other personnel in a work context.
• Numeracy skills: interpret tyre handler instruments and indicators; read and interpret metric and imperial systems of measurement.
• Initiative skills: identify and avoid potential work obstructions and danger to passing traffic.
• Planning and organising skills: prepare and lay out work area, and obtain equipment and material to avoid wastage and workflow interruptions.
