1 Prepare for movement of pigs

2 Move pigs

2.1Determine pigs to be moved individually and/or in groups
2.2Handle, move and/or lift pigs using safe manual handling techniques, and low stress animal handling techniques
2.3Monitor pig behaviour during all handling and moving activities, and identify and respond to situations and hazards that arise to avoid or minimise injury to self, others and pigs
2.4Report and seek assistance from supervisor for incidents and/or risks beyond level of own responsibility

3 Complete movement of pigs

3.1Check pigs are safely and securely housed or enclosed at destination
3.2Reset gates and raceways as required
3.3Clean and store equipment used to handle and move pigs as required
3.4Complete pig movement records, and report incidents according to enterprise procedures

Performance evidence

There must be evidence that the individual has safely, efficiently and calmly moved pigs from one location to another, including at least:
• four groups of pigs, with each group to include at least three pigs
• an individual pig.
For each pig movement, the individual must have:
• identified at least two health and safety hazards, and assessed and controlled and/or reported associated risks
• selected, checked and correctly fitted appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
• used safe manual handling and low stress animal handling and moving techniques
• ensured passageways are ready and safe for pigs to move through
• selected and effectively used tools and equipment to handle and move pigs as required.
For at least one pig movement, the individual must have:
• confirmed and followed enterprise biosecurity requirements
• used safe manual handling and/or lifting techniques
• separated a targeted pig from within a group of pigs
• secured pig at their destination
• completed movement record.
Mandatory workplace requirements
All performance evidence specified above must be demonstrated in a pork production site.

Knowledge evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:
• key features of state/territory legislation, regulations and codes of practice for worker health and safety, animal welfare and biosecurity that apply to handling, lifting and moving pigs
• enterprise procedures and requirements for worker health and safety, animal welfare and biosecurity that apply to handling, lifting and moving pigs
• hazard identification, risk assessment and controls to minimise risks when handling, lifting and moving pigs
• key features of pig body language and behaviour, including:
- herding
- flight zone and field of vision, including flight or fight responses
- protective behaviours of sows and boars
- reaction to light, sudden sounds, movement or changes in environment
- reaction to obstacles in pathways and changes in flooring conditions
- incline and decline issues
- exploratory behaviour using smell, hearing and sight
- signs of distress, and methods for assessing pig stress levels based on their behaviour
• safe manual handling, and low stress methods and techniques for handling, lifting, moving and securing pigs
• zoonoses, including erysipelas, Japanese encephalitis, leptospirosis, worms and influenza
• types and methods of identifying pigs
• enterprise documentation, records and reports required for pig movements.
